The Inspiration Behind Charlotte’s Kips Bay Room

The sounds of sitars, balalaikas and sarangis
The melody of foreign accents Cultures of color and lands of contrasts
A palampore, periwinkle, paisleys and palm trees on the Nile
The ginghams of Mongiardino, Vanderbilt and Valentino
Flickering lanterns, incense and fluttering felucca sails
Bonacina and Billy Baldwin
A Chinese screen, an eglomise mirror, a Dutch lantern
A secretaire from Sweden and an Indian rug
Gertrude Bell, Freya Stark and Jane Digby
Baskets from Tanzania, necklaces from China and Suzani embroidery
Delacroix, Constant and Gerome
A bedroom of memories, a visual journal, a place to dream…

Our imaginary resident of the room is a couple who loves to travel, and wanted a bedroom that reminded them of where they had been… as well as housing some of their favorite things:

The Chinese screen, the Dutch lantern, Bonacina chairs made near Lake Como, a silk carpet made in India, and other mementos.
