Nancy Lancaster’s Sitting Room, Avery Row
We are excited to launch CREATING A ROOM!
How many times have you seen a room that you would love to re-create but don’t know where to begin?
Where do I find everything? How do I make this look my own?
The answer? Let us decorate for you!
Each month, we will post an iconic room and bring it to life.
We will…
- Scheme it
- Source it
- Link you to all of the suppliers, purveyors, craftspeople and fabricators that you might want to re-create this room
We are kicking off the series with the WINNER of the ICONIC ROOM CHALLENGE, the Nancy Lancaster yellow room. Known as the “buttah yellah” drawing room, this room was designed in the 1950’s with John Fowler.
Nancy Lancaster, co-owner of Colefax & Fowler with John Fowler, was a 20th-Century tastemaker known for her English Country House Style. She had that “hard-to-pin-down but instantly recognizable gift of style,” as the Duchess of Devonshire once said.
What we love about this room? Cecil Beaton said it best, when he proclaimed that Nancy, had a “talent for sprucing up … and making a grand house less grand.”
Nancy Lancaster had the unique ability to relax interiors, and this room, one of her own, is a classic example.
