by Campbell Conard from the East Hampton Star

Charlotte Moss, named one of the world’s top 20 interior designers by Traditional Home magazine, is a longtime East Hampton homeowner. In addition to running an interior design firm, which has been open since 1985, Ms. Moss has written many books, launched furniture and china collections, and serves on the boards of several nonprofit organizations, including the Madoo Conservancy in Sagaponack. Here, she answers The Star’s Five Questions.

What is the best part of your job?

“The best part of my job is the opportunity to keep getting better at it; each project is different, and you are constantly learning while you are creating something beautiful for others. It is a privilege.”

What is the most interesting thing you have ever designed?

“I recently designed a doggy shower-bath for a client with a big mastiff. I’ve also done a spa for a client, with a massage table and fashion art to decorate the walls. Last year I designed a hunting ranch in Texas — rattlesnakes and all.”

What is the best part about community service?

“Volunteering and raising money for charity. It’s what Brooke Astor said: ‘Money is like manure, it needs to be spread around.’ ”

If you have a day to yourself, what do you do?

“A day to myself. . . . Hmm, I read, take the dogs to the beach in the early morning, putter, read more, write a letter, nap, meditate with face mask on after a treadmill or bike ride, organize my studio while listening to ’70’s music, arrange flowers, garden.

Can you estimate the combined weight of all of your coffee table books?

“I think they weigh about 50 pounds.”
