Marella Agnelli’s Marrakesh Bedroom

This month’s CREATING A ROOM ™ features the Marrakesh bedroom of the late Marella Agnelli. In decorating this room for herself, Mrs. Agnelli enlisted Alberto Pinto for assistance. A gloriously feminine, pink and white bedroom which seems to mimic the pink and white bougainvillea just outside the door. Wicker, mahogany, wood inlaid with mother of pearl, a tailored bed canopy, and embroidered bed linens collectively transport you to an exotic destination. New, old, high, low, with and without provenance, all marry into one cohesive, restful, and elegant room.

View of the terrace outside the master bedroom.

Creating a Room ™ was inspired by the iconic rooms of our designing past. These rooms are repeatedly referenced by other designers, editors, tastemakers and style mavens. We are constantly asking ourselves WHY? Why these rooms? What is it that draws us back time and again? I believe it is that ineffable quality, the one we call style that eludes us, defies all definitions yet, we know it when we see it. What we refer to as atmosphere, that certain ambience that is the sum of its parts, all of them, large and small, ceiling to floor, absolutely everything within four walls. And, not to forget the air in between.

In the introduction to VOGUE’S BOOK of HOUSES, GARDEN PEOPLE Diana Vreeland proclaimed, “…few things are more fascinating than the opportunity to see how other people live during their private hours…in the rooms they love, and in the gardens they have planted…”

Creating A Room ™ is our new column dedicated to making some of these iconic rooms come alive. How were they furnished? What were they reading, what books were on the shelf? What was the fragrance that greeted visitors? How were they dressed?

These rooms have invited us to revisit them time and again. Why wouldn’t we want to recreate, adapt some for our own? Each month we will source furniture and accessories, provide similar schemes and suggest paint colors and wallpapers. We will take an educated guess at a fragrance, and even take a peak into the closet. Every source mentioned will be linked to makers of furniture and accessories, fabric houses, paint companies and craftspeople. We will try to be as expansive as possible and to give you alternatives. After that, it’s all up to you.
